FUTURE TENSE AND INTENSIONS OF EXPRESSION (on the materials of M. Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita” and its translations)

  The paper provides further examination of future tense forms in Russian literary texts and their translations. The research is based upon the corpora of parallel translations of M. Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita” into English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. Forming one of the steps towards the creation of the functional typology of the future tense, the paper focuses on comparing and contrasting ways of expressing intentions in a certain context. The usage of future tense forms to state, discuss, confirm, accept and deny future plans and intentions is discussed. The dependence of utilizing simple future and present tense forms as well as analytic structures in translations on various parameters of a future action such as its occurrence in immediate future, stated time etc. and the speaker’s attitude towards the action is shown. The translator’s choice is determined by the factors mentioned above as well as the translator’s own interpretation of the context.

  The article reviews different approaches in the German linguistic tradition to the problem of distinguishing between verbal units with preverbal elements, prefixal verbs, compound words and syntactical structures. The article addresses the question of what criteria can be successfully applied to determine the status of the preverbal particles and models they are involved in. Finally the article presents the results of a complex structural-semantic analysis of colloquial verbal units with the durch-component. This analysis reveals the word-formative specificity of German preverbal particls in general.
