THE TIME CATEGORY IN A POLITICAL CARTOON
ID: 0421200038\XXXX
Key words: political cartoon, creolized text,
polycode text, text categories, time category, time dimension, retrospective
reference, prospective reference
The
article approaches the political cartoon as a creolized text with the time
category similar to that inherent in a homogeneous verbal text. The purpose of
this study is to identify the potential of employing verbal and iconic means to
express temporal characteristics in a message in the form of a political
cartoon. The means conveying temporal characteristics in a cartoon are defined
with the help of the textual network method in combination with the linguistic
description and the contextual and definitional analysis. The genre peculiarity
of the political cartoon as a type of message, namely, the immediate refraction
of reality through the prism of the cartoonist’s vision, implies simultaneity of
the reference moment and the event, or, in other words, location of the time
point in the present. Moreover, analysis of Walter Hanel’s cartoons proves the
fact that, in the political cartoon, locating the time point in the present does
not exclude the variety of time dimensions in the message. Using diverse codes
(both verbal and non-verbal) in one message and appealing to the message
addressee’s background knowledge and logic the artist can specify the time
actual for the message, introduce the traces of the past into the present and
make projections onto the future. The article demonstrates the variety of time
dimensions in cartoons, describes the construction peculiarities of the former,
and the methods linking a message to the actual time through certain verbal and
iconic means. It also considers the instruments used to project the message
events on the historic time vector and to realize retrospection and prospection.

The
article discusses an example of cognitive approach to teaching foreign students
to read in Russian. This is about text analysis based on a cognitive scheme –
the construct widely used in cognitive science to analyze the knowledge
organization in memory. The teacher's scheme is the basis for the construction
of the cognitive graph by students. The cognitive scheme helps to assimilate not
only the content of the text, but also some morphological and syntactic rules of
Russian by giving the opportunity to go beyond the text into the grammar of the
language. The article provides an example of using a cognitive scheme for
medical text analysis.
