ID: 0421200038\0159

Key words: diminutive, designation of person, age, quantity, smallness, size, semantics, linguistic worldview, linguoculture

The article deals with semantic, structural and linguocultural peculiarities of diminutive designations of person according to age in English worldview. The empirical corpus has been compiled according to a number of clearly formulated criteria. The semantic classification of English diminutives has been carried out with multi-level representation of diminutive semantics being identified. Gender and cultural specificity has been determined. Age interpretation in the English worldview is based on a linear concept of time, the priority of which is determined by its cultural significance for English speakers. The article identifies designations of person belonging to the following age groups: childhood, youth, adulthood, old age. Asymmetry is represented by a significant bias towards diminutive designations of child as a central meaning of diminutivity, namely, ‘small size’ and ‘child’. Semantic structure of diminutive designations under study includes age, gender, appearance, behaviour and other components, which helps to define the boundaries of the reference group. Diminutive designations of person on the basis of age can express small size, young age, affection and derogation at the morphological, syntactic and lexico-semantic level.
