METACOMMUNICATION UTTERANCES IN THE SPEECH OF JUDGE

The article focuses
on metacommunication utterances, and specifically on their functions in the
speech of judge. The author examines peculiarities of judicial dialog, and
points out the main functions of judge in court session. With the help of the
examples found while analyzing the stenographs of some court sessions, the
author shows that abundance of metaoperators is common to judicial dialog in
whole and to the speech of judge in particular. He also makes conclusion that
metacommunication utterances play a key role in the speech of a court session
participants and judge particularly.

The article focuses
on the typology of interrogative statements in judicial dialogue. In the article
the author refers to the study of functional and stylistic aspects of
interrogative statements in judicial dialogue, considering it as a functional
style of an institutional nature. Basing on the analysis of transcripts of the
U.S. Criminal Court proceedings, as well as on the typologies of interrogative
statements, described in general and communicative grammar, the author arrives
at a conclusion about what type of questions proves to be a striking style
marking feature of judicial dialogue.
