THE MAGIC AND THE RATIONAL IN ANGLO-SAXON HEALING CHARMS
ID:   0421200038\0054

Key words: healing charms, Anglo-Saxon charms, magic, rational practices, paganism, animism

The article examines the issues of the magic and the rational in the Anglo-Saxon charms, which are the source that allows us to see the elements of the cultural and spiritual life of our ancestors. In the charms, both magical practices and rational actions are observed. Magical actions include repetition of certain verbal formulas and actions, the use of words incomprehensible in meaning, a certain timing of the ritual, endowing objects of the material world with supernatural power. Rational actions are noted in the use of herbs to cure diseases, in creating remedies. The combination of various practices in charms demonstrates, on the one hand, animistic belief that a spirit resided in all nature; on the other hand, it testifies to rational elements in medical practice as the results of experience and observations of ancient ancestors. From a culturological point of view these charms unravel the foundations of traditional medicine, which were laid in the pre-scientific period of the development of society.

Key words: subtitles, subtitling, intersemiotic translation, audiovisual text, diagonal translation, verbal and nonverbal signs, cinematic discourse

This article analyzes subtitling as an intersemiotic translation. The article presents various linguists’ points of view on this problem. Through the analysis of theoretical material and examples of subtitles from a feature film, the study found that intersemiotic translation in subtitling is fragmentary, and mostly the process of subtitling of film discourse is intrasemiotic. A subtitler should take into account meanings that are generated and represented through the integration of meanings conveyed by signs which belong to different semiotic systems in cinematic discourse.

THE CLASSIFICATION OF ECOLOGICAL APPROACHES TOWARDS LANGUAGE
ID:   0421200038\0062

Key words: lingvoecology, ecolinguistics, classification, cognitive ecology, aspects of language

The article explores a number of existing typology of linguistic approaches seeking to extend the idea of ecology to the language domain. All of analyzed typologies have a common feature ? they all are based on criteria which are external to the language itself: from the point of view to the function of language in research and society till the way of applying anthropocentric principle to view the ecological purpose of language. In the current article, we do one more attempt to classify the ecological facets in linguistic studies. Our classification is built on the criterion, which is internal for the phenomenon of language. I consider ecologically oriented studies in linguistics taking into account the aspect of language specially focused by researchers. To specify such aspects I use four-aspects language conception elaborated by Lev Shcherba and completed later by Alexandra Zalevskaya.

  V. in memory of the linguist

The article written in memory of A.L. Faktorovich briefly analyses the creative development of the outstanding scholar. The authors focus on several themes that are significant to understanding the personal preferences and the scientific potential of the conducted research. The authors provide a comprehensive description of the category of ellipsis based on the principle of conceptual integration of grammatical, pragmatic and cognitive factors. The phenomenon of A.L. Faktorovich’s ambivalence is projected on the essential qualities of an ambivalent language personality, navigating between two semantic poles ? discourse stereotypes and creative speech acts. It is pointed out that discourse indicators are either explicitly or implicitly present in most works by A.L. Faktorovich, whose scientific legacy requires attentive research.
